Just off the coast of central Maine lies the second largest
island in the state and a great vacation community, Deer Isle. While many
people are aware of its much busier neighbour, Mount Desert Island, Deer Isle
has many attributes which make this fishing village on Penoscrotal Bay a great
vacation town
This small village has many family-owned establishments that
create a very friendly and personable environment for visitors. Nervous
Nellie’s Jams and Jellies is well known locally for being such a place. This
small, one-of-a-kind attraction includes a jam and jelly store, a sculpture
garden and museum, and much more. If you’re interested in the arts, Deer Isle
does not disappoint.
A visit to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts provides
guests with the opportunity to learn how to work with clay, glass, metals,
paper, blacksmithing, weaving, and woodworking. Built in 1912, the Stonington
Opera House offers theatre, music, and dance. Each August this theatre is home
to the Deer Isle Jazz Festival. These are just some of the attractions to this
vacation community.
Despite the small size of the island, Deer Isle has a
significant display representing artists from the region. Most of the art
galleries in this vacation community are on the main road of the island and
offer several types of art. The Turtle Gallery was established in 1982 as one
of the first galleries on the island.
Starting out as a small storefront representing local
artists, the gallery today includes artists from all around the region and
includes paintings, prints, photography, jewellery, sculpture, fibre, glass,
ceramics, book arts, and wood. The Lester Gallery is the display of the Maine
landscape photographer Terrell S. Lester.
The Red Dot Gallery specializes in local artists and
includes mixed media, paintings, jewellery, fibres, and clay. The Blue Heron
Gallery opened its doors in 1987. It features contemporary pottery, blown
glass, wood furniture and accessories, fibre, forged iron, jewellery, paper,
and mixed media.
This town is also known for its sea food cuisine and bed and
breakfasts. Some of the sea food establishments include Fisherman’s Friend,
Maritime Café, and Harbour Café. Some of the bed and breakfasts are Inn on the Harbour,
Boyce’s Motel, and Pilgrim’s Inn and Cottages. The lovely inns of this vacation
community offer great views of the water in addition to friendly small-town
hospitality.
With great hospitality, fresh sea food, and a passion for
the arts, Deer Isle is a great vacation community. The lack of knowledge of
this great vacation town means there are less people on the island making a
visit peaceful and enjoyable. So if you’re looking for a unique and quiet
vacation town, try Deer Isle, Maine.
